The Wilmington High School girls soccer team dropped its first South Central Ohio League match of the season Tuesday to Chillicothe 5-2 at Alumni Field.

The loss puts the Lady Hurricane at 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the SCOL.

“Chillicothe is the best team in the league but we’re within striking distance,” said WHS coach Kerry Lewis. “We play CHS again in three weeks at the end of the regular season. Between now and then we still have tough games ahead of us with Hillsboro and Clinton-Massie. Hopefully, we can stay in the hunt and our final game will be for the SCOL title.”

Savannah Morgan scored both Wilmington goals from corner kicks by Drezden Beam. The first goal actually put the Lady Hurricane on top 1-0 in the sixth minute, Lewis said.

But the Lady Cavaliers scored the next four goals and led 4-1 at halftime.

Morgan then headed in a goal off a Beam corner in the 56th minute to make it 4-2 but Wilmington would get no closer. Chillicothe scored in the final 34 seconds of the match.

“We’ll review the film, correct our errors and get ready for the next game,” said Lewis.

Lewis commended the play of his bench in the match. Also, the coach said Cami Barton, Erin Cornwell and Bri Gilbert played well for the Lady Hurricane.
