County trio fails in state track, field bids

The track and field season ended for athletes from Wilmington and East Clinton Friday at Southwest Regional meets.

Wilmington competed in the Division I Dayton Regional meet at Welcome Stadium while East Clinton was at the Division III Troy Regional meet at Troy High School.

EC senior Ethan Ambrose finished 10th in the high jump at Troy Memorial Stadium.

Ambrose missed on his first two attempts at 5-8 but cleared it on his third try. He had one miss before clearing 5-10 but the missed all three attempts at 6-0.

Last week, Ambrose cleared 6-1 at the district meet. The fourth place height on Friday was 6-1.

Wilmington senior Jessica Haynie was 11th in the shot put competition.

Haynie fouled on her first try then had a 27-9.25 toss. He final effort was 31-1.5, her best of the night, but she well off the 36-1 fourth place distance.

Ryland Bowman, a sophomore at WHS, was 11th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.81 seconds. There were two heats of the 200 on Friday because the preliminaries were postponed Wednesday because of inclement weather.

Bowman was third in his heat but the second heat proved to be much faster and eliminated Bowman from contention to the state meet.

The fourth place time was 22.35 seconds.

NOTEBOOK

• Clinton-Massie and Blanchester boys and girls, and East Clinton girls will compete in the Division II Piqua Regional meet Saturday beginning with field events at 11 a.m.

• The Blanchester boys 4×400-meter relay quartet of Tanner Creager, Derick Bowman, Ricky Davis and Dylan Miller ran 3:41.84 and finished 14th on Thursday, failing to qualify for Saturday’s final. It was reported in Friday’s edition the relay qualified for the finals. The News Journal regrets the error.
