1943-44 Kingman High School basketball

The 1943-44 Kingman High School boys basketball team. The team was coached by Tom Wall and Harold Stanfield, both farm boys in the community who were attending Wilmington College at the time. They were enrolled in farm management classes at night at WC. Because of the war, many coaches were in the military and not available so community members coached many of the teams at this time. In fact, there were two schools that had co-coaches (Wayne Township was the other with John McClary and Supt. William Myers) in charge. In addition to Myers, superintendents coached at Clarksville (Clifford Camp), Adams Township (Robert Barbour) and Jefferson (Walter Nichols) Township. During the season, Carl Kennedy pulled his Port William team off the floor and subsequently resigned. Superintendent M.A. Shepard took over the team. Sabina won the regular season with a 10-0 record. Kingman was 6-4. However, Martinsville won the county tournament with Kingman fourth. In the photo, Kingman players are, from left to right, Paul Taylor, Eugene Sallee, Don Harner, Milo Hartsock, Bob McKay, Thomas McMillan; back row, coach Thomas Wall, Maynard Curry, Thomas Shipley, Edwin Lane, Dwight Roseli, Harold Freeland, Ben Edwards, coach Harold Stanfield.
