Matrka to be inducted into Coastal Carolina HOF on Nov. 11

Wilmington High School graduate Marie Matrka will be inducted into Coastal Carolina’s George F. Buddy Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 11.

Among the other inductees is professional football player Josh Norman.

The induction ceremony will be held prior to the Chanticleers’ home football contest with Troy.

Matrka played tennis at Coastal Carolina from 2001-05 and was voted to the Big South Conference All-Decade Team (2000-09). She was the 2005 Big South women’s tennis player of the year. A three-time All-Big South selection in singles and four-time All-Big South pick in doubles, Matrka was strong in the classroom as well, earning third team CoSIDA Academic All-America in 2004 and was a four-time ITA All-Academic Team member. She was the Big South women’s tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2004 and 2005.

The 2001 WHS grad ranks third on the Coastal Carolina all-time singles wins list with 91 and is tied for second for all-time doubles wins with 92.

Following her career at Coastal Carolina, Matrka has continued her tennis dominance in Southwest Ohio, winning eight titles in the Thomas E. Price Cincinnati Metropolitan Tennis Tournament championship.

In the previous 11 years, Matrka has won eight singles titles, a Met record. Matrka, who was inducted into the Clinton County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, also has won seven doubles championships in the Met event.
