GERMANTOWN – The Wilmington Hurricane ran into a Varnadoe in its season opener Friday night at Germantown Valley View.

P.J. Varnadoe, filling in admirably for injured Collin Genslinger had eight carries for 116 yards and three touchdowns and hauled in another 57-yard TD pass to help lead the Spartans to a 52-31 victory to start the 2017 campaign.

Genslinger left the game with 14 carries, 171 yards and one touchdown.

Spartan quarterback Collin Wood connected on 14-of-18 passes for 283 yards and three touchdown passes.

Wood and Varnadoe put away the Hurricane with three fourth-quarter touchdowns after Wilmington knotted the game at 31 just before the end of the third period.

Wood hit Austin Clark with a 67-yard pitch-and-catch on the first play of the fourth quarter to break the tie.

Wilmington marched to the Valley View 13 on the next drive looking to knot the game again but turned the ball over on downs.

A play later, Varnadoe broke Wilmington’s back with an 87-yard scamper to push the Spartans’ lead to 45-31.

A Valley View interception with 6:42 left in the game led to another Varnadoe score four minutes later.

The teams combined for 1,119 yards, 639 of them by the Spartans.

Wilmington’s Dylan Beaugard finished with 10 catches for 90 yards, 10 rushes for 122 yards and connected on 2-of-3 passes for 63 yards, including a 60-yard halfback touchdown pass to start the game.

Hurricane running back D.J. Ames chipped in with 12 carries for 107 yards and the touchdown that tied the game at 31.
