CM pair wins 2nd doubles at Wilmington Invitational

WILMINGTON — Clinton-Massie’s doubles team of Nina Lazic and Megan Wonderly won three lengthy battles Saturday and captured the second doubles bracket championship at the Wilmington Invitational tennis tournament on the WHS courts.

“Saturday was a great day for tennis,” CM coach Lynn Deatherage said.

Wilmington’s top finishers were the first doubles pairing of Emma Schroder and Brooklyn Nielsen, who were runnersup in their bracket.

King was the overall team champion.

Lazic and Wonderly won their first match in a pro-set tiebreak 12-10 over a pair from Lebanon. Against a Kings High School duo, the two won a third set, pro-set tiebreak 10-8. In the finals against Fairfield, Wonderly and Lazic rallied from a first set loss to capture the title 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Overall, Clinton-Massie was fourth, despite playing without top singles player Hailey Clayborn.

“Anne Thompson filled (Hailey’s) shoes well with a third-place finish at first singles,” Deatherage said. “Everyone (on the CM team) posted at least one victory on the day. We’ll take a fourth-place (team) finish in this field with a different lineup. We were only two points behind Goshen and still two points ahead of Wilmington.”
