ROB’s Deer has keen eye for archery

Turns out Fawn Girard is more than just a world-class archer. She’s a pretty good teacher as well.

Girard, of Martinsville, has qualified for the United States Archery team going to France Sept. 19-24 to compete in the World Archery 3-D Championship.

One of Girard’s students at the Clinton County Farmers and Sportsman’s Club is Baylee Deer, an eighth grader at Wilmington’s Rodger. O. Borror Middle School.

Deer recently earned Super Slam honors in the Ohio Archers Association as well as the Youth Shooter of the Year for the Bowhunter Freestyle division. Super Slam honors are given to a shooter who wins all seven OAA shoots in a season — Indoor 300 State Championship, Bowhunter shoot, Vegas 450, Flint Round, Mark 3D Trail, Field Championship, and 900 Round.

Deer broke three record scores during the year in her class, the Bowhunter Freestyle age group 12-14.

Deer, 13, began working in archery in 2015. Girard helped her with her form, technique and breathing. Her first competition shoot was the OAA 2016 Indoor 300 State Championship. She finished second.

Over the next year, Deer continued to practice during the week and on weekends at the club and returned to the state indoor championship, where she took home the state championship.

Hard Nocks Archery in Englewood, Ohio, is now sponsoring Deer as a Junior Prostaff. Jon Fugate owns Hard Nocks Archery.

Deer also represents Rogue Bowstring. She mostly uses an Elite Compound Bow during competition.

Deer is far more than just an archer. She carries a 4.0 grade point average, plays fast-pitch softball, volleyball, soccer and is a trumpet-playing member of the Wilmington band. Deer was chosen as the ROB 7th Grade Student of the Year.

The youth archery program at the CCFSC is held on Sunday evenings. The program instructors are Girard, Steve Jarrell, Ken Girard, Neil Fugate and Rodney Dalton.
