WHS girls win Flight F title, Clinton-Massie third

CINCINNATI – Wilmington edged Seton by 15 points Saturday to claim the Flight F championship in the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association Coaches Classic at Princeton High School.

Clinton-Massie was third in the team standings.

Wilmington won both doubles brackets. Brooklyn Nielsen and Emma Schroeder posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kohl and Moss of McNicholas to claim the first doubles title.

Zane Bekheet and Kristina Walt rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in the second doubles bracket over Cappel and Bengel of Seton.

“Our doubles teams are playing really well right now,” WHS head coach Doug Cooper said. “They are hitting their stride at a good time of the season. Brooklyn and Emma are 15-3 and have a nice eight-match winning streak. Zane wins wherever we put her. She’s won 10 in a row.”

Sophie Reed was runnerup in the second singles bracket.

“It was really nice to see Sophie playing well again after suffering some back problems last week,” Cooper said. “She just needed some rest. She had nice wins against Princeton and Seton, and nearly won her bracket. Winning those first round matches were key.”

Allie Kees was fourth at first singles for WHS.

On the Clinton-Massie side, Anne Thompson and Raelee Schultz were both second in their singles brackets.

The doubles teams were both third-place finishers – Claire Carruthers and Hailey Stinchcomb, and Megan Wonderly and Jenn Callewaert.

“Clinton-Massie had a really strong showing, especially considering they are playing without their regular first singles player,” said Cooper. “We’ve been there. I remember how frustrating it was when Rachel Hartley missed the entire girls season with a knee injury. Anne (Thompson) is playing very good tennis. She is one of the most complete players in the SBAAC.”

Massie coach Lynn Deatherage was pleased with her squad’s effort on the court as well as the off-court demeanor of both WHS and CMHS.

“The girls played great tennis Saturday,” Deatherage said. “The singles players did a nice job of adjusting their strategy and style against spin and speed they don’t normally face. The doubles teams picked up their match play and communication for solid wins.”

Off the court, Deatherage said both schools were first-class.

“Tennis is a great sport. Clinton-Massie lost to Wilmington on both doubles courts Thursday evening in tough, three-set matches,” she said. “In the back draw finals, the Wilmington team cheered on their Clinton-Massie counterparts for victory over the city opponents. The sportsmanship exhibited by the Clinton County athletes in support of each other was great to witness and it did go both ways.”
