WILMINGTON – The Wilmington High School boys soccer team defeated Batavia 8-2 Tuesday night in a Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference American Division match at Alumni Field.

Winners of three straight matches, the Hurricane is now 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the American Division.

Batavia drops to 5-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.

“If you were in the stands (Tuesday) you saw a great soccer game from the boys,” WHS head coach Imad El-Macharrafie said. “In many ways, I think we broke through to our full potential.”

Sam Spirk posted another hat trick, scoring three goals while assisting on two others. Seth Gundlach had two goals and two assists.

Charley Schumacher, Brady Vilvens and Josh Vaughan also had goals for the Hurricane. Assists went to Schumacher, Nate Lakes, Jacob Romer and Jake Vaughan.

Graham Vilvens snared five saves in goal for Wilmington.

“We had some guys with injuries return and return in a big way for us and I know our team has a great feeling going right now,” El-Macharrafie said. “Offensively we took care of business and business was booming. Hats off to our midfielders who I thought really stepped up and had a great game.

“Defensively I think we have a good look going on. I always remind them they have to be very aware of their position on the field and when they communicate with one another they make it fun to watch back there, especially when they play with that chip on their shoulder the moment the whistle blows. Great team win tonight.”
