Record-setting win sets up showdown

ADAMS TOWNSHIP – Jim Brown Stadium will be the place to be next Friday night.

Unbeaten Clinton-Massie (7-0, 2-0) and unbeaten Goshen (7-0, 2-0) will square off in a SBAAC American Division showdown 7 p.m. Friday.

The Falcons ran roughshod all over Western Brown 79-14 Friday at Frank M. Irelan Field while the Warriors were 52-17 winners over Wilmington at Alumni Field.

The 79 points is a single game CMHS record.

Derick Carlisle’s 11 extra point kicks also is a CM record and tied with numerous others in state history for No. 2 all-time in a single game.

Massie scored points in bunches on Friday – a touchdown 23 seconds into the game, then nine points on a TD and safety within 55 seconds in the opening period.

In the final 48 seconds of the first period, Massie scored two touchdowns, the latter an interception return for touchdown with no time on the clock by Garrett Trampler.

After a slow start to the second quarter – it took the high-flying Falcons 4:19 to score their first points – they then scored four touchdowns in a span of 5:15. Trampler again capped the spree with a 69-yard punt return.

Turning things over to the junior varsity for the entire second half, Massie played the Broncos to a 14-14 standoff.

Massie outgained Western Brown by a not-so-eye-popping 469-173 for the game. However, the Falcons had 341 yards at halftime while the Broncos could muster just 19 yards.

Christian Poynter had his usual workman-like performance – 10 carries, 121 yards, 3 touchdowns. He was not the only effective offensive player. Clinton-Massie had 23 first downs on just 39 offensive plays. Those 39 plays netted 469 yards (12 yards a play).

In fantasy football terms, Garrett Trampler would have been a dream player for the defense/special teams thanks to the interception and punt returns for touchdowns. Trey Uetrecht was the lead tackler with five total, including two behind the line of scrimmage.
