Hurricane outslugs Broncos in shootout 56-35

WILMINGTON – In a good, old-fashioned shootout, Wilmington outlasted Western Brown 56-35 Friday night at Alumni Field.

But in the words of WHS head coach Scott Killen it wasn’t the prettiest of wins, however getting a victory is all that matters.

“Well, it was ugly but we battled right to the end and it was nice to get the win on senior night,” Killen said. “Now, we get ready for the next game.”

Coming up next for Killen’s crew will be the once-beaten Clinton-Massie Falcons. Clinton-Massie defeated New Richmond, 44-14, on Friday night.

The Hurricane improves to 6-3 overall and is now 2-2 in the SBAAC. The Broncos fall to 1-8 overall, 0-4 in the conference.

Wilmington jumped out to a 21-7 first quarter lead, but the pesky Broncos came right back with a 14-7 advantage in the second quarter, making it a 28-21 lead for the Hurricane at the halftime intermission.

The teams battled for field position throughout the third quarter, before the Broncos tied the game at 28-28 on a three yard run by quarterback Josh Taylor.

Mason McIntosh, who has stepped in as starting quarterback following the season-ending injury to Brady Evans, utilized his speed and maneuverability to get into the end zone to put the ‘Cane on top, 35-28, following Brady Henry’s PAT kick.

The Broncos, however, fought back and forged the tie score at 35-35 on the ensuing drive.

Wilmington’s Matt Smith collected his third touchdown reception at the 5:38 mark, and Henry’s PAT put the Hurricane back on top for good.

D. J. Ames scored his second touchdown of the night with just under 3:00 to play making it 49-35.

Defender Kyler Reed slammed the door shut on the Broncos with an interception on the ensuing drive.

Frantz Cherisca closed out the scoring with an electrifying 75 yard scamper down the sideline right in front of his teammates, and Henry booted the PAT thru the goalposts to make the final score 56-35.
