The Wilmington High School boys soccer team made school history Saturday with a 4-1 win over Ross in a Division II sectional match at RHS.

For the first time, a WHS boys soccer team advanced to the third round of the post-season tournament.

The Hurricane will play Roger Bacon 7 p.m. Tuesday at Milford High School in one of three sectional championship games.

“The boys did really well at adjusting to grass (playing surface). They played very hard and passed the ball on the ground just well enough to get to their goal and score four times,” said Wilmington head coach Imad El-Macharaffie.

Ross came in to the match as the No. 4 seed in the sectional while Wilmington was the No. 8 seed.

Wilmington got off to a fast start with a goal from Sam Spirk assisted by Brady Vilvens just three minutes into the match.

Shortly thereafter in the 12th minute, Ross came back with a goal by Jason Cook to tie the game at 1-0.

It wasn’t until the 43rd minute that the Hurricane was able to score its next goal. With a perfectly placed chip ball from Seth Gundlach to Sam Spirk, the Hurricane suddenly took a 2-1 lead and the things began to change.

In the 50th minute a shot by Sam Spirk was deflected into the air and headed in by Brady Vilvens giving him his first goal of the tournament and a 3-1 WHS lead.

Senior Charly Schumacher also recorded his first goal of the tournament in the 63rd minute assisted by Gundlach giving Wilmington a 4-1 advantage.

Gundlach and Spirk both broke Wilmington seasonal records with Gundlach having 24 assists and Spirk having 36 goals.

Jake Vaughn also had an outstanding night with 8 saves in goal for WHS.

“We have to be very proud of these guys,” said El-Macharaffie. “This has never happened to us before and we are moving on to the third round.”
