Falcons overpowers Wildcats to open season

ADAMS TOWNSHIP – It took less than a quarter for Clinton-Massie to knock off four months of football rust.

Down 9-7 with 1:33 left in the opening period, Zack Chowning came off the bench to hit the first of his four first-half threes to spark a 17-1 run.

The Falcons would go on to open the season with a 59-47 victory over cross-county rival Blanchester in the second semifinal of the 2017 Clinton-Massie Boys Basketball Holiday Tournament.

The Falcons will play Hamilton Badin, a double overtime winner over Dayton Christian, at 8 p.m. Friday.

Blanchester (2-4) will play Dayton Christian at the same time in the Clinton-Massie Middle School Gym.

Chowning finished with 19 points on 7-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc.

Two other Falcons reached double-figures – Thomas Myers with 13 and Daulton Wolfe with 10, including three threes.

Wolfe buried a pair of threes at the start of the second half to give Massie its first lead of 20-plus points, 42-20.

Chowning hit back-to-back buckets five minutes later to build Massie’s biggest cushion, 53-28.

Blanchester whittled that margin in half, 58-44, with 3:11 left in the contest. That’s as close as Blan would get until shortly before the final horn.

Brayden Sipple led the Wildcats with 13 points. Jordan Stroud chipped in with 10.
