Wilmington 4th grade football advances

The Wilmington Hurricane fourth grade football team has advanced to the second weekend of competition in the Western Ohio Junior Football Conference tournament.

The fourth grade Wilmington Orange squad defeated Springboro White 14-0 Saturday and moved into a second round matchup against Miamisburg Blue.

“They have the will to win; they fight to the last minute,” said coach Travis Mellinger. “To me, that make it that much more fun (to coach).”

The fourth grade team is made up of Landon Mellinger, Alex Smith, Owen Withers, Avery Hughes, Jevin Hughes, PJ McKnight, Jonathan Custis, Alex Massie, Hunter Wood, Aryn Fleak, Mikey Brown Jr., Austin Oglesby, Andrew Potts, Antwion Glass, Caydn Denniston, Garrett Anderson, Daveion Smith, Landon Flint, Aiden Price and Patrick Tucker. In addition to Mellinger, coaches on the team are Mike Brown Sr., Matt Flint, Sam Smith, Nathan Denniston and Chuck Tucker.

Both Wilmington Orange and Miamisburg Blue are 7-1 on the year, with Miamisburg’s lone loss coming Oct. 10 to Wilmington, 14-0. The second round playoff game will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 31, in Miamisburg.

The winner will advance to the fourth grade bracket semifinal round Noon Nov. 7 at Alumni Field.

A WOJFC semifinal round game will be held Nov. 7 at Alumni Field in each age group. In addition to the fourth grade game, the Bantam Division game is 9 a.m., the third grade game is 10:30 a.m., the fifth grade game is 1:30 p.m and the sixth grade game is 3 p.m.

In the 23-team Bantam Division tournament, the Wilmington Orange team was defeated by the Springboro White team 26-12 this past Saturday. Wilmington Orange finishes its season with a 1-6-2 record.

Also in the Bantam Division, Wilmington Black defeated Fairborn Blue 24-7 on Saturday then lost to Meadowdale Black 12-0 on Sunday. Wilmington Black finishes with a 3-5-2 record.

The Wilmington Orange third grade team was knocked out of the tournament Saturday with a 32-0 loss to Springboro White. Wilmington Orange finishes at 3-5-1.

The Wilmington Orange fifth grade team was defeated by Springboro White 16-0 in the first round and finshes 5-4.

In the sixth grade bracket, Wilmington Orange lost to Springboro White 28-0 and finishes 5-3.
