NEW RICHMOND — The Blanchester girls basketball team rallied late in the game but fell short to New Richmond 61-57 in a non-league game at the NR gym.

Blanchester falls to 7-2 on the year.

Maren Hantz had 18 points, including 8 of 9 at the line, to pace the Lady Lions offense.

“Hantz is a hard matchup for us,” said BHS coach Bennie Carroll. “Even when we were able to help, she was able to find open people. She’s just a pretty good player.”

The Lady Lions were 8 for 13 in the fourth quarter at the line. They were 22 for 31 overall at the line.

Sarah Burton led all scorers with 20 points. The BHS senior hit 5 3-pointers.

“We really wasted a pretty good offensive game,” Carroll said. “We just didn’t play well defensively.”

New Richmond took the lead in the third quarter and built the margin up to 11 at one point, Carroll said.

But the Ladycats clawed back to within 3 before falling by 4.

“We just couldn’t get the big play when we needed it,” the coach said. “The girls gave it all they had. We had 5 games in 10 days. The girls were totally beat after that game.”
