WILMINGTON – Despite several forfeits throughout the match, the Wilmington versus Miami Trace battle Thursday night at the Rodger O. Borror Middle School gym was a good one.
Trace, the perennial South Central Ohio League champion, edged out the Hurricane 45-35.
Wilmington defeated Hillsboro 58-18 in the first varsity match of the night.
The Panthers then dispatched the Indians in the final match of the evening.
One of the top matches of the night was at 182 pounds where Miami Trace’s Matthew Hottinger decisioned Wilmington’s RJ Tolliver 5-4 UTB.
Tolliver was down 3-0 well into the third period when he rallied to send the match to overtime.
Despite the loss to Miami Trace, Tolliver is as excited as ever about his squad’s chances of ending the Panthers reign as league champion.
“Hillsboro went exactly the way we thought it would, there were no surprises,” said WHS coach Kelly Tolliver. “When our whole lineup is in place, they (Miami Trace) are not going to touch us.”
“When our heavyweight is back in place and (Jacob) Boldman is in the lineup, I don’t think anybody can touch us. I definitely still think we’re the team to beat.”
And Tolliver believes regardless of the outcome of any future tournaments, his Hurricane will be ready. They won’t be overconfident at any time.
“In the room, the kids are really … it’s hard to describe. It’s just way more exciting in the room,” said Tolliver. “It’s fun to come to practice every day. They stay on each other constantly, they’re pushing each other. They are driven.”
The coach also believes his inexperienced wrestlers will be more than ready for the February grind.
“The other guys that are just barely winning now, by the time February get here, they’re going to pulling out a lot of pins and techs,” Tolliver said. “They’re a little rough around the edges, we have to do a lot of work in the room with these new guys. When January and February get here, we told them, you guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with.”
