WC women lose late lead, match to ONU

ADA – The Wilmington College women’s lacrosse team allowed the game-tying goal with three seconds remaining and the winning goal with 2:38 remaining as the Fightin’ Quakers lost to Ohio Northern 14-13 in double overtime at Dial-Roberson Field in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

The Polar Bears scored five of the last six goals to record the victory.

Senior Abby Jude gave Wilmington the lead with 1:34 remaining on a free position shot, and following a foul with seven seconds remaining, ONU tallied a free position shot for the tie.

The teams traded goals in the first half as there were six ties and three lead changes. Back-to-back goals by senior Rachel Routzong gave Wilmington the 7-6 halftime lead. Two straight goals by senior Stephanie Belz opened the second half with a pair of goals to open up the biggest lead of the game, 9-6.

Ohio Northern answered with three consecutive goals to pull even, but WC reclaimed the lead with three straight goals. Once again, the Polar Bears tallied three in a row to pull even before the teams traded late goals.

Belz finished with three goals and one assist, while Jude and Routzong finished with three goals each. Junior Nikki Northern added two goals and an assist, while senior Loryn Bryson scored twice.

Senior Katie Bennett finished with 21 saves on 35 shots.

Wilmington (2-13 overall, 0-6 OAC) hosts Baldwin Wallace 7 p.m. Saturday in the season finale.
