Growing Quakers fall to Wooster in 3

The Wilmington College volleyball team battled through all three sets, but ultimately, it was the College of Wooster that made a couple more plays in Wednesday’s non-conference match in Fred Raizk Arena at Hermann Court.

The Fightin’ Quakers fell in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18, in what could be termed a growing experience for a youthful bunch that features just one senior. In fact, Wilmington held a lead in all three sets.

Wilmington and Wooster were tied at 17 in the first set before the Scots slowly pulled away for the 25-22 win. The second set was more of the same, but Wooster started to gain traction early. The Scots built a three-point lead at 9-6, and while Wilmington trimmed its deficit to two on several occasions, WC couldn’t get over the hump.

The third was almost identical to the second as Wooster had an early three-point lead. However, a six-point burst midway through the set gave the visitors their biggest lead of the match, and the Scots coasted to the final.

Sophomore Kennedy Harshaw (Xenia, OH/Xenia) and junior Catlin Pauley (Kenton, OH/Riverdale) combined for 25 of Wilmington’s 36 kills. Harshaw’s 13 kills were a career-high.

Senior Ariana Neff (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) finished with 26 assists, a team-high nine digs, a block solo and four kills. Sophomore Becca Harting (Farmersville, OH/Valley View) added eight digs, while Harshaw and sophomore Kaleigh Trevino (Vandalia, OH/Butler) added seven digs.

Wilmington (0-4) travels to the Earlham Tournament this weekend.
