Capital pulls away from WC 49-27

The Wilmington College football team dropped its Ohio Athletic Conference opener Saturday night, 49-27, to visiting Capital under the lights at Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

“We had our chances and were in the game but you’ve got to give Capital credit. They executed their game plan and their big plays just killed us,” said WC head coach Stacey Hairston. “We showed a lack of discipline at times and those miscues really hurt us. Today was a reality check and we’ve got to improve. Our guys got a little ahead of themselves. They thought, all off sudden since we won two weeks ago against Bluffton, that we were much further along than we really were.”

As the score indicates it was an offensive-driven contest, as the teams combined for more than 960 total yards. Capital had the advantage 509-458. The biggest difference was Capital’s rushing attack which generated 351 yards in the ground. The Crusaders offensive line is led by East Clinton High School graduate Zach Bennington.

Leading the Capital rushing attack was Brent Walton, who had 179 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

Hairston saw progress with the Quakers offense but finishing drives is an area that still needs improvement.

“We moved the ball down the field but the bottom line is getting points,” he said. “We had some drives where we were in a good position to score but came away empty. We gotta get points. We’re working hard but mistakes, and some penalties, took away our momentum.”

Capital scored touchdowns on each of its first two drives, en route to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Wilmington cut the deficit with a TD early in the second quarter but a crucial penalty against the Quakers gave the momentum back to the Crusaders.

WC was called for a roughing the kicker penalty which gave the Crusaders a first down at the Wilmington 36. Capital cashed in on a 23-yard run resulting in a touchdown and a 21-7 lead.

Although the Quakers responded with a touchdown on their next series, the Crusaders tacked on a score with 2:30 remaining and took a 27-14 lead at halftime. Capital then scored 17 straight points to start the second half and put the game away.

Two Wilmington receivers, Justin Lee and Brandon Mitchell, each had more than 100 yards. Quarterback Luke Credit had 219 yards passing, completing 16 of 27.

Chase Manica just missed getting 100 yards on the ground, collecting 96 yards on 11 carries for the Quakers.

Defensively, Tarrell Starkey had 10 tackles and Wilmington High School product David Henry had eight tackles and two sacks.

Wilmington travels to Westerville to face Otterbein 2 p.m. Saturday before returning to Williams Stadium Oct. 3 to host Marietta for the 2015 Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
