MARIETTA – The Wilmington College men’s soccer team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play by falling to Marietta Saturday, 2-0, at Marietta Field.

“We started slow and it seemed to take us a while to get comfortable and into the game flow,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “For the most part we managed well, but they were able to get a ball deep to their leading scorer.”

The Pioneers (6-5, 1-0) scored goals in each half, tallying markers in the 38th and 71st minutes.

“I thought we could get a goal,” said Lewis. “In the second half, we had some chances.”

Wilmington launched eight shots, five of which were on goal, while Marietta recorded 17 shots. Ten of the Pioneers’ shots were on frame.

Freshman Niklas Martennson (Torna Hallestad, Sweden/NTI) led the team with three shots, two on goal. Senior Ethan Zimpfer (Botkins, OH/Botkins) and sophomore Grady Garrison (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) had two shots each.

Junior Nick Baker (Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) finished with eight saves, allowing two goals in 90 minutes.

Wilmington (3-8 overall, 0-1 OAC) hosts Ohio Northern 7 p.m. Tuesday.
