WC football slammed by No. 21 JCU

The Wilmington College football team yielded more than 500 yards of total offense and lost to No. 21 John Carroll, 62-14, Saturday at Don Shula Stadium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

John Carroll took the opening kickoff back 91 yards, and never trailed.

Wilmington’s special teams returned the favor as senior Justin Lee (Middletown, OH/Madison) took a kickoff 86 yards for his first career kickoff return for touchdown. The score cut the Fightin’ Quakers’ deficit to 14-7.

The Blue Streaks rattled off 41 unanswered points, including 34 straight in the second and third quarters.

Wilmington had a chance to get its first offensive score in the fourth quarter, but a pass deflected off a WC receiver in the endzone for an interception.

However, the Fightin’ Quakers tallied an offensive score later in the quarter as sophomore Luke Creditt (Wilmington, OH/Waynesville) hit freshman Brandon Mitchell (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) from eight yards out. Mitchell used his 6-7 frame to out-jump the JCU defender for the score.

Mitchell finished the game with 83 yards on four catches and a touchdown. He has now recorded a receiving score in three of Wilmington’s five games. He was also 2-for-4 passing for 32 yards.

Lee led the team with eight catches and 92 yards.

Creditt finished with 164 yards on 12-of-30 passing with one touchdown and three interceptions. He was sacked a season-high six times.

Freshman Gino Hinton (Maples Heights, OH/Maple Heights) carried the ball a team-high 11 times for 27 yards.

For the third time this season, senior Nick Williams (Cleveland, OH/Fairview) recorded double-figure stops, finishing with 10 tackles, seven of which were solo. Senior Tarrell Starckey (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs) added nine tackles, five solo.

Senior Amari Bryant (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) recorded an interception for the second straight game. He added a team-high three pass break-ups.

Wilmington (1-4 overall, 0-4 OAC) stays on the road to play Baldwin-Wallace 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
