BHS rallies for win after slow start

FAYETTEVILLE — After a slow start, the Blanchester volleyball team defeated Fayetteville 20-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-13 Wednesday in a non-league match at the FHS gym.

“We were beating ourselves for the majority of the (first) set,” said BHS coach Rebecca Doughman. “We came back ready to play the second set from the beginning. We gathered momentum and took three in a row.”

Sarah Burton had 15 kills and three blocks in a strong match at the net. As a team, Blanchester had 37 kills and only 11 errors, Doughman said.

Allie Evans led the BHS defense with 19 digs and 38 perfect passes. She also had six points. Kayla Dugger had seven digs and 16 perfect passes. Stephanie Gerlach had five digs.

Shayla Sicurella had a good serving match, Doughman said, with 12 points, two aces and zero service errors. She also had two digs and two kills.

Burton also had an assist, nine points, three aces and a dig. Asia Baldwin had six kills, two blocks, five points and three digs. Dugger also had 15 assists, seven kills, four points and an ace. Hannah Wisniewski had 13 assists, five kills, two blocks, six points, two aces and two digs. Rachael Doyle had two assists and a kill. Cheyenne Brown had a kill and Heather Hurtt chipped in with a dig.
