Browns QB McCown can’t practice until Friday with concussion

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns starting quarterback Josh McCown can’t practice until Friday because of a concussion, so backup Johnny Manziel will be with Cleveland’s first-team offense the next two days.

McCown was injured in Sunday’s season opener against the New York Jets. He is following NFL protocol and won’t be medically cleared to practice until Friday — at the earliest.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said the team will be “prepared either way” for Sunday’s home opener against Tennessee if McCown returns to practice.

Pettine said McCown is allowed to be outside on the field to watch practice.

Manziel replaced an injured McCown and threw a touchdown pass, but had three turnovers in Cleveland’s 31-10 loss. Manziel has been dealing with a sore elbow and Pettine said the Browns will be careful not to overload him with throws this week.
