SCOL Roundup: Great gesture by Blue Lions

The four South Central Ohio League matchups this week all pit a 1-0 team against an 0-1 team.

• 1-0 Clinton-Massie hosts 0-1 McClain.

• 1-0 Wilmington hosts 0-1 Hillsboro.

• 1-0 Washington travels to 0-1 East Clinton.

• 1-0 Chillicothe travels to 0-1 Miami Trace.

All games are set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

While the league rivalries are fierce both on the field of play and among fans, it is heart-warming that one school will be honoring the family from an opposing school.

Brad Hanners, the father of East Clinton football players Austin Hanners and Luke Hanners, died Sept. 15 at the age of 43. He was well-known in the harness racing industry, especially in Fayette County.

So the Blue Lions players will be honoring Hanners’ as well as his sons, despite facing them on the field. Washington head coach Corey Dye is asking Blue Lion fans to wear orange to honor Hanners.

“As a school, and as a team, we are going to try and support the Hanners family by wearing orange,” Dye said. “I’d like for our fans to come out and support the Hanners family following their tragic loss. This is kind of our way of helping out the family. A lot of people from Fayette County knew him. I didn’t know him personally, but I knew who he was. Our kids are going to wear orange socks and an orange sticker on their helmets to honor Mr. Hanners.”

The only game that does not involve a Clinton County team is the Chillicothe versus Miami Trace game. The Cavaliers won last year’s meeting, 28-14. They also won the 2013 contest, 20-14 in overtime.

According to the Joe Eitel website, Miami Trace and Chillicothe did not play each other from 2012 dating back to the 2001 season.
