Big 2nd quarter not enough for BHS

BLANCHESTER – Williamsburg scored twice in the fourth quarter to spoil a raw, rainy, windy homecoming Friday night, defeating Blanchester 27-20 at Barbour Memorial Field.

After a second quarter that saw Blanchester rack up 121 yards of offense and three touchdowns, Williamsburg took over in the second half.

Williamsburg (4-2, 1-0 SBC National) ran the final 10 plays of the first half but failed to score. They started the second half right where they left off before the intermission.

An 11-play, 60-yard drive opened the third quarter for Williamsburg and ended when Zack Ward scored on a 10-yard run. With the driving wind and rain at his back, Cameron Hart drove the extra point through to cut it to 20-14 Blanchester.

Blanchester (1-5, 0-1) picked up just one first down before punting back to Williamsburg.

Another lengthy drive followed. This time, it was a 10-play, 64-yard march that ended with a Spencer Clowery 1-yard score. The extra point this time went into the monsoon, and the kick was blocked. The game was tied at 20.

Unable to move the ball, Blanchester punted again after a three-and-out. Williamsburg nearly saw the Blanchester punt downed at the 1, but the ball made it into the end zone for a touchback.

With 4:06 left on the clock, Williamsburg started from its own 20. On second down, Kurt Meisberger rambled 35 yards to the Blanchester 42.

The drive continued as ‘Burg churned out the yards. Runs of 5, 1, 8, 5, -2, 9 and 8 moved the Wildcats to the Blanchester 8 with around a minute remaining.

With 45.8 left, Williamsburg ended the 10-play, 80-yard drive with a Meisberger 8-yard run. Knowing they were kicking into a driving rainstorm, the soccer-style kicker Hart was replaced with the straight-on kicking Justin Durham, who drove the ball through.

Blanchester would have one final chance, down 27-20 with 45.8 left. After a sack on first down, Tristan Greene found Quenton Miller for 15 yards.

However, on third and fourth downs, the wind took Greene passes over Miller’s head, and Blanchester drive stalled at the 45.

Outside of the second quarter, it was a tough go for Blanchester’s offense. Blanchester gained 121 of its 189 yards in the period.

Williamsburg held Blanchester to 34 yards rushing in the second half, and just 80 yards rushing for the game.

The stats tell the story of how Williamsburg would grind the game away. Williamsburg ran 19 more plays than Blanchester (62-43) including 14 more in the second half (34-20).

Burg had 10 more first downs than Blanchester (17-7) and outrushed them 282-80.

Meisberger finished with 110 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Clowery had 94 yards on 18 carries.

Hunter Collier led Blanchester with 50 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
