WC women streak ends, 2-1

ADA – The Wilmington College women’s soccer team had its five-match winning streak come to an end Wednesday as the Fightin’ Quakers fell to Ohio Northern, 2-1, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Kerscher Stadium.

“We played the kind of game we planned on playing,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “Strategy-wise, we did a good job. You take their two free-kick goals and that’s the game.”

Freshman Stephanie Max (Brookville, OH/Clayton Northmont) tallied her third goal of the season, depositing a through ball from freshman Katie Evans (Leesburg, OH/Leesburg-Fairfield) in the 23rd minute. The goal knotted the game at one.

However, the Polar Bears answered 32 seconds later on a set piece off a free kick.

“When you get into OAC play, free kicks can be the difference between wins and losses,” said Spirk. “Free kicks are very important in OAC play.”

It was the last goal of the game as neither team got on the board over the final 66 minutes.

Max accounted for two of Wilmington’s three shots on goal, and was the only player with multiple shots. The Fightin’ Quakers finished with seven total shots.

Freshman Brittany Ross (Covington, OH/Newton) faced six shots, making four saves.

Wilmington tallied eight fouls and one yellow card, while the Polar Bears committed six fouls.

Wilmington (7-4 overall, 1-1 overall) stays on the road, traveling to John Carroll 7 p.m. Saturday.
