Public education advocate to speak locally

WILMINGTON — Award-winning advocate of public education Jamie Vollmer will share his experience in removing obstacles to student learning — both in and out of the classroom — in a lecture Monday, Aug. 8 at Southern State Community College’s Central Campus in Hillsboro. Area educators, members of boards of education, community leaders, and community members are encouraged to attend.

The event is hosted by the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center in conjunction with Southern State Community College, Great Oaks Career Campuses and the Brown County Educational Service Center.

The event is free and is open to the public. The lecture begins at 10 a.m. in the SSCC auditorium.

Vollmer will share his experience as an educational critic who transformed into an educational champion. Vollmer will help audience members identify the corrosive social forces currently undermining support for schools and will discuss a strategy to reverse this trend. He will examine the threats arising from multiplying mandates, shifting demographics, and media hype and aggressively refute the popular belief that the people who work within our schools are the obstacles to meaningful reform.

Vollmer’s presentation will share with audience members how to effectively implement a public engagement strategy that will empower them to increase community understanding of the challenges facing our children and our schools; increase community trust in their local schools to accomplish the goal; increase community permission to make the changes needed to teach all children to high levels; and increase community support throughout the complex and emotional restructuring process.

Audience members will gain a practical understanding of how they can implement positive steps that can immediately engage community members in the creation of schools that unfold the full potential of every child.

Information for this presentation was provided by Diana Miller, who coordinates communications for several area schools.
