Stop for the school bus — it’s the law

0

Now that schools are back in session, many of us will start to see school bus service again. Safety of our children is paramount, and the motoring public needs to mindful of school buses.

Under Ohio law, motorists have to stop for school buses when loading and unloading children. Drivers have to yield to the buses when the red lights and stop sign are present. Motorists have to give at least 10 feet from the front and the rear of the bus while they load and unload.

Far too often we encounter someone who failed to yield to a bus and the comments were, “I didn’t see the lights or the sign.” Under Ohio law, this isn’t a defense. Ohio law even permits us to cite a motorist for failing to stop based upon the bus driver’s observations.

The penalty for failing to stop for a school bus is a $500 fine and a license suspension.

Odds are in our city you have kids on the bus, know kids on the bus, or have some other direct connection to our wonderful school system. Let’s make sure we all do our part to make sure our kids get to school and from school safely.
