MIDDLETOWN — The Wilmington High School boys soccer team defeated Middletown 3-1 Monday in a Div. I sectional tournament match at Middletown’s Barnitz Stadium.

The outcome could be considered an upset if based purely on tournament seeding. Middletown was seeded No. 18 and Wilmington was seeded at No. 23.

“We have a lot of faith in these guys when they execute the game plan and play strong, fast, Hurricane soccer,” WHS head coach Imad El-Macharrafie said. “It says a lot about this team to go from an SCOL (South Central Ohio League) conference championship to being seeded in the bottom 10 of the Southwest District and defeating a much higher-ranked Div. I team like Middletown.”

The Hurricane season will continue in the second round of the tournament with a match against Cincinnati St. Xavier 7 p.m. Thursday. The match will be played at St. Xavier High School.

Wilmington goals were scored by Sam Spirk, Charley Schumacher and Josh Vaughan. Spirk was credited with two assists.

Jalen Douglas, the WHS keeper, made a career-best 12 saves.
