NEW CONCORD — Two goals early in the second half lifted the Wilmington College women’s soccer team to a xxxx win Wednesday over Muskingum in Ohio Athletic Conference action at McConagha Stadium on the MC campus.
The win puts Wilmington College at 6-6-4 overall and 1-5-2 in the OAC. Muskingum drops to 4-13 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
Steve Spirk’s WC women will close the regular season 1 p.m. Saturday at Heidelberg in an OAC match.
A pair of Clinton County products split time in goal for the Quakers. Ana Hosler, a Blanchester High School graduate, played the first half and faced five shots with one goal allowed. Leda Moyer, a Clinton-Massie High School graduate, then stepped between the pipes in the second half and was credited with one save.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the first half. Ashley Lovett, a Washington Senior product, put Wilmington on the board in the 27th minute with an unassisted goal, weaving her way through the Muskies defense to beat the MC keeper.
Shortly thereafter the Muskies tied the match at 1-1 with Morgan Price’s goal in the 34th minute. The Muskies closed the half with a flourish offensively but Hosler was up to the task and kept the match even at the break.
As the second half unfolded, the WC women continued to carry the play and finally put the tallies on the scoreboard to reward their efforts.
Taylor Scott, from Lynchburg-Clay High School, scored in the 51st minute with Katie Evans notching an assist. Then in the 57th minute, Haley Burge found the back of the next with an unassisted goal to make it 3-1.
Moyer made a save early in the second half then didn’t face a serious challenge until late in the match when the Muskies hit the post in the 84th minute. By then, WC was well in control of the outcome.
Lovett and Evans shouldered the load offensively for WC, combining for 15 of the team’s 32 shots.
Wilmington held a 32-10 advantage in shots, and a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. The Quakers had six corner kicks compared to the Muskies two. WC was whistled for 16 fouls while MC had five.
