Scoring 45 points in each half, and utilizing a tough defensive effort Saturday, the Wilmington College women’s basketball team posted a 90-60 victory over Marietta in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena.

“Today was a total team effort,” said WC head coach Jerry Scheve.

The victory improved the Lady Quakers to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in the OAC.

“Marietta is a very talented team, one of most athletically tough teams we face during the season,” Scheve said. “To score 90 against them is very good and holding them to 60 required some tough defense on our part. The girls executed the game plan very well.”

The Lady Quakers jumped out to a 25-8 first period advantage, which they extended to 45-23 at the intermission. Wilmington came out with fire power in the third period, posting a 29-16 effort which put the game away, 74-39.

“What really pleased me today was the fact we kept the pressure on, putting the pedal to the metal, so to speak. Sometimes in the past, when we have had the opportunity, we did not. But today was different,” said the veteran WC coach.

Utilizing his roster to the fullest, 12 different players reached the scoring column, with four starters in double figures. Mackenzie Campbell led the way with 15, Savannah Hooper and Brittaney Jefferson added 12 each, and Ashley Andracki scored 10. She also dished out seven assists, while Jefferson had five steals.

A closer look at the numbers on the stat sheet brought a smile to Scheve, the production in terms of 28 assists.

“Last year, we were dead last in the conference on assists to turnover ratio. Today, it was a two to one ratio. That’s very good,” he said.

Wilmington turned it over 13 times in Saturday’s victory.

Now Wilmington gets ready for the Fred Raizk Memorial tournament, beginning Tuesday evening. Wilmington faces Alma College in the opening game, tipping off at 6 p.m.

“Alma is a very competitive team,” said Scheve. “They play a very tough schedule and they just played two of the better teams, Hope and Calvin, in our Great Lakes Region. We’re going to need a real good effort against them.”
