COLUMN: Cumberland earns 2nd rookie honor in last 3 weeks

For the second time in three weeks, University of Cincinnati freshman Jarron Cumberland was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

The 2016 Wilmington High School graduate also earned the honor two weeks ago.

Cumberland averaged a team-high 12.5 points, shooting 57.1 percent (8 of 14) from the field and 71.4 percent (5 of 7) from three-point range in 22.5 minutes in a pair of conference wins last week for No. 22 Cincinnati.

Cumberland registered a career-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting with a trio of three-pointers to go with four rebounds and two steals against Tulane on Sunday. He had six points, including a key three-pointer with four minutes to play in Cincinnati’s 56-50 road win at Temple on Dec. 28.

It marks the second time in three weeks Cumberland has won the league award. He tallied 18 points and six rebounds while making 7-of-9 field goal attempts, including 4-of-4 from three-point range against Texas Southern (Dec. 13). He also posted 11 points with a trio of threes and a career-high five assists against Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 17).

Cumberland is averaging 6.8 points while shooting 47.7 percent (31 of 65) from the field with 15 three-pointers in 15.6 minutes off the bench this season.

Cincinnati (11-2, 2-0 American) plays its next contest at Houston (11-3, 2-0 American) on Saturday. The game will tip at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU and 700 WLW. Houston plays host to Tulsa on Wednesday before welcoming the Bearcats.

On Dec. 29, in 68-65 loss to Hillsdale, had 18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 1 steal in 30 minutes. In Dec. 15 win, 70-54, over Indiana University at Kokomo.

• Kasey Uetrecht (Clinton-Massie, 2014) … Basketball at Northern Kentucky University. On Dec. 31 in 72-44 loss to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, had 19 points and 2 rebounds in 32 minutes. On Dec. 29 in 70-39 loss to University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, had 4 points, 10 rebounds 2 assists in 38 minutes. On Dec. 21 in 58-53 win over Southern Mississippi, had 6 points 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.
