CLARKSVILLE — Clinton-Massie Elementary and Middle School students recently competed in the initial rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition that encourages students to improve spelling, increase vocabulary, identify word patterns and develop correct English usage.

Leading up to the event, classroom teachers encouraged students to prepare for the competition by building their word knowledge by learning new words and practicing for the bee.

Prior to qualifying for the school-wide spelling bees, all elementary students in grades 1 through 5 and middle school students in grades 6 through 8 participated in individual classroom spelling bees where class champions advanced to the school-wide competition.

At the conclusion of the elementary school’s classroom bees, the following students advanced to the school-wide competition: First graders Corban Cartner, Andrew Gentry, Lillie Kratzer, Evalynne Porter, and Jackson Randolph; second-graders Nicholas Hanlon, Isaac McElhaney-Wells, Colson Morgan, Graham Roark, and Alyssa Sandlin; third-graders Treygen Byington , Collin Chiarini, Garrett Doyle, Dakin Johnson, and Lila Theetge; fourth-graders Sami Brown, Isabella Bullock, Owen Goodwin, Alexxis Michaels, and Madilyn Wetz; and fifth-graders AJ Brewer, Sammy Dameron, Joe Howard, Cayden Long, and Kenzie Wahsum.

The elementary school-wide spelling bee lasted nine rounds, with fourth-grader Owen Goodwin and fifth-grader Kenzie Wahsum going head-to-head in the final three rounds.

It was Goodwin, with his correct spelling of the word “sentries” that ultimately took the title of school champion. Spelling honors also went to Kenzie Wahsum, who finished second; Alexxis Michaels, third; Sami Brown, fourth; and Treygen Byington , fifth.

The middle school spellers also impressed judges with their spelling knowledge and vast vocabularies.

At the conclusion of the middle school’s classroom bees, the following students advanced to the school-wide competition: Sixth-graders Ally Coy, Wade Hughes, Gage Manis, Isaiah McCoy, and Avery McKee, Kylee Wilson; seventh-graders Chloe Brizendine, Jacob Crisenbery, Kaitlyn Franklin, Malachi O’Leary, Kassie Renner, and Delaney Schneder; and eighth-graders Mikayla Craycraft, Abby George, Makenna Love, Heather Muselin, Elle Paul, Tyler Roberts.

After 22 rigorous rounds of competition, it was Abby George who took the first-place title, with special congratulations going to second-place winner Mikayla Craycraft and third-place winners Elle Paul and Makenna Love.

Both Owen Goodwin and Abby George will advance to compete an online vocabulary and spelling test for the opportunity to qualify for the semifinal regional spelling bee.

A maximum of 70 area school champions will qualify for participation in the 2017 WCPO 9 On Your Side Regional Spelling Bee in March at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.

The champion of that bee will represent the area at the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. later this year.
