DAYTON — Senior Aric France qualified Thursday for the Div. II Southwest District bowling tournament.

As a team, however, the Clinton-Massie boys bowling squad missed advancing by 121 pins.

The Div. II girls sectional bowling tournament was held on Wednesday at Poelking Marian Lanes in Huber Heights. Clinton-Massie did not compete in the tournament.

In the Div. II boys sectional tournament at Poelking Marian Lanes, France finished with a 573 total. He will bowl in the district tournament 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Beaver-Vu Lanes in Beavercreek.

The top four teams and the top four individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the state tournament out of the district.

“I have no doubts that if Aric’s on his game what he can do,” CM coach Shonda Marburger said.

At the sectional, the Falcons had three individual games of 790, 867 and 840. Their six baker games were 163, 169, 134, 169, 151, 157 for a 943 total.

“We fell apart in the bakers, but we always struggle in the bakers,” said Marburger. “We have kids who average 180 or higher and then when it comes to bakers … our highest was 169. I haven’t figure yet why we struggle in bakers.”

Their combined pinfall total of 3,440 was 12th overall. The top 10 teams advanced from the sectional to the district. The 10th place team finished with a total of 3,560.

“It was disappointing,” Marburger said. “We had the guys who could do it (qualify to district). I think they all could have bowled better. The pins just weren’t falling for us.”

Among the 26 teams in the tournament, for a total of 78 games, only two were over 1,000 pins with Dayton Carroll’s 1,007 the highest of the tournament.

“It was low scoring,” said Marburger. “We moved to a different pair (of lanes) each game. Not sure what happened. I think the 790 could have been the lowest score we had this year.”

Aside from France, junior Jacob Wellman was the top Clinton-Massie bowler with a 501 three-game series. He had games of 187, 121 and 193.

Junior Kenton McInerney bowled 479 with games of 147, 179 and 153. Junior Joey Marburger’s total of 453 included games of 124, 205 and 124. Corey Potts, also a junior, bowled two games 156 and 143. Junior Chandler Morsch finished the third game with a 192.

In addition to the bowlers who participated in the three teams games, freshman Adin Lamb bowled in the baker games for the Falcons.

Despite the season ending for all bowlers but France, coach Marburger was happy with the season her squad had in finishing 27-5.

“The boys should be very happy with our season,” said Marburger. “I couldn’t be more proud of them. They’ve done well this season.”

In addition to the team qualifiers, the top 10 individuals not on a qualifying team advance from the sectional to the district.

France was second on that list. The left-hander bowled 176, 219 and 178. He was ninth overall in the tournament but second among non-team qualifying individuals.

Caleb Westfall of Mechanicsburg had a 727 to top all bowlers. He finished with games of 290, 158, 279.
