Loss to BW sends WC women into OAC tourney as No. 3 seed

BEREA – The Wilmington College women’s basketball team had its comeback fall short Saturday as the Fightin’ Quakers fell to Baldwin-Wallace, 61-54, at Ursprung Gymnasium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

With the loss, Wilmington will be the third seed in the upcoming OAC tournament. The Fightin’ Quakers will kick off tourney play 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fred Raizk Arena against the winner of Monday’s first round game between Heidelberg and Mount Union.

On Saturday, Wilmington shot just 17.8 percent (5-of-28) from the field in the first half as the Yellow Jackets raced out to an 11-point halftime lead.

“We were getting beat up and down the court in transition,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “We didn’t have our legs early and we had to work hard to stay within shouting in distance.”

The Fightin’ Quakers fell behind as many as 15. Sophomore Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) scored six points during a 14-1 run that enabled Wilmington to pull to within one with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter.

“We have a competitive group,” said Scheve. “They were able to turn up pressure and it Mackenzie was able to get going.”

Wilmington pulled to within one possession several times, but BW’s Katie Smith hit three big three-pointers each time. She tallied 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Campbell finished with a team-high 18 points, all in the second half, and was the only Wilmington player in double figures. She added five rebounds and two assists.

Senior Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie) pulled down 15 rebounds, 13 on the defensive end, to finish the regular season with a league-best 9.5 rebounds per game.
