George Clinton Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution announced two essay contests:

• The annual American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5-8;

• The Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest for students in grades 9-12.

Both are open to any student in the stated grades. Essays are due to the George Clinton Chapter by October 28.

The topic and specific rules for the contests have been sent to administrators and teachers in the grade-appropriate buildings in Clinton County.

Parents, if your child’s school has chosen not to participate in the essay contest but your child would like to participate, you may contact: Mrs. Kanyuck for the fifth- through eighth-grade contests for all of the rules of the contest; or Mrs. Sharp for the high school contest. Their emails are below.

Grades 5-8 contest

The American History Essay Contest (grades 5-8) topic for this year is “Delegate to Second Continental Congress.” The Second Continental Congress met from May 10, 1775 to March 1, 1781 and included delegates from all 13 colonies. This Congress was instrumental in shaping what was to become the United States of America.

Imagine that you are a delegate during 1775-1776. Which colony are you from and what will be important for you to accomplish for your colony?

Length of the essay should be: grade 5 — 300 to 600 words; and grades 6, 7 and 8 — 600 to 1,000 words.

For information and the rest of the rules, email Mrs. Kanyuck at [email protected].

Completed essays are due to Mrs. Kanyuck via her email by October 28.

High school contest

Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest is a new contest established by NSDAR in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation. The contest is open to students grades 9-12 in public, private, parochial schools or homeschooled.

All entries will be judged together with one local winner to receive $50.

The topic is “Select a figure from the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783). Discuss how he or she influenced the course of the American Revolution, who he or she was and his/her contribution to the founding of a new nation.”

Your figure may be any person, whether a well-known figure or an everyday man, woman or child who supported the American Revolution in ways large or small. The length must be between 800 and 1,200 words.

For more information and the rest of the rules, contact Mrs. Sharp at [email protected].

Completed essays are due to Mrs. Sharp via [email protected] by October 26.

Judging

Both contests are judged locally and then first-place winners will be sent on to the Southwest Ohio district contest. Winners at that level then get sent to the state competition.

Parents and teachers are asked to encourage their children/students to research, write and then enter the contest.

George Clinton Chapter looks forward to reading the entries of the talented young writers of this county.
