2023 Spring Preview: East Clinton boys track, field

East Clinton boys track and field coach Michael Fritz believes his Astros can be a good team.

With a squad made up mostly of younger, inexperienced athletes, there’s little to base the potential success on as training begins. Nothing is as telling as competition when it comes to determining future success.

“Having a live meet would be beneficial to us to see where we are at,” said Fritz, who is in his third year as the boys head coach after seven seasons as the boys track and field coach.

Fritz is assisted this season by Bob Malone, Bob Henson, Josh Simmons, Jayson Edison, Anthony Joseph and Savanna Davis.

Newcomers of note, Fritz said, are Max Gulley, Zimri Mahanes and Jackson Seabaugh.

Fritz said Jacob George and Elyon Hackmann have proven to be leaders for the Astros as the season unfolds. George, Glenn Peacock and Dylan Arnold are the top returning athletes based on 2022 results. In all there are six returning letterwinners on the team.

Fritz said Williamsburg is the team to beat in the SBAAC National Division. East Clinton finished fifth in the league meet a season ago.

Fritz said the overall number of athletes on the team are down a bit this season but the young talent is plentiful.

“Overall we will have a smaller team than usual this year but we are loaded with young talent,” he said. “Hopefully these younger athletes will continue to work and develop the way that we know they can.”
