WILMINGTON — After 45 years as a cooperative weather observer, Nancy Pickard of Wilmington is retiring.

During those 45 years, she has been providing daily temperatures and precipitation data to the National Weather Service.

On the occasion of her retirement, and in recognition of her dedication and long service, Pickard received an award and a letter from the top official of the National Weather Service, Louis Uccellini. In it, he stated work such as hers “help us understand and solve problems related to climate change, commerce, transportation, and agriculture.”

And Science and Operations Officer Seth Binau with the Wilmington NWS office told Pickard that just last week he utilized a lot of her data to help a concerned farmer who called and wanted to know about Clinton County’s precipitation patterns.
