WILMINGTON — A clerk was assaulted during a robbery at a carryout store on Monday.

Police responded to Hidden Carryout on West Main Street around 9 p.m. Monday in reference to a panic alarm, according to the Wilmington Police Department report.

WPD Sgt. Ron Fithen told the News Journal an unknown male suspect entered the business and took an undisclosed amount of money from the register.

Fithen also said the suspect struck the clerk — Carl Butts, age 63 — in the head multiple times before taking the money.

No further information about Butts’ possible injuries or condition was released.

Authorities seized the handle of an Airsoft pistol, according to the police report.

“We’re still waiting on surveillance video to confirm whether or not the suspect hit (Butts) with the weapon or with his fists,” said Fithen, adding they are gathering footage from security cameras in the area to help identify the suspect.
