RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) — A former Ohio school superintendent has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sexual contact with two male students while she was the district’s high school principal.

Laura Amero, 35, apologized before sentencing Monday in Portage County, the Record-Courier in Ravenna reported. She pleaded guilty in November to two counts of sexual battery and one count of misdemeanor gross sexual imposition.

Prosecutors accused her of having sex with a 16-year-old boy in 2017 and attempting to have sexual relations with another student when he was 16 and 17 years old. Amero was appointed superintendent of the Windham Village Exempted Schools in February 2019. She resigned in June.

Amero responding to a question from Judge Laurie Pittman blamed her actions on mental problems. Pittman then gave Amero the maximum sentence allowed for the sexual battery counts.

Amero won’t report to prison until April 1 because she is eight months pregnant. Defense attorney Joseph Gorman said an appeal is planned. He argued that Amero should have received probation.

Windham is roughly 47 miles southeast of Cleveland.
