NV park closed as building razed

NEW VIENNA — The Mayor and Village Council of New Vienna “with heavy hearts would like to inform everyone that the park and playground for small children on Main Street, beside the library, will be fenced off and unavailable for use until at which time the dilapidated building next door is torn down and removed.”

The privately owned building has been vacant and falling apart for years but recently has progressively gotten worse, according to a news release from the village.

“The building has rapidly deteriorated since the Village of New Vienna, using a once-in-a-lifetime grant, was able to create the park. There is fear of the building collapsing and someone being seriously injured. Due to EPA regulations in handling lead and asbestos debris, the demolition cost is approximately $120,000.

“The land the building is on will revert over to the Village but at this time the funds are not available for demolition and removal and until such time as the money is raised, the park will remain closed for the safety of our children.”
