WILMINGTON — The inmate at the Clinton County Jail who was hospitalized last week — after what officials believe was an overdose of an illegal drug — died Friday. Marc Burch was 30.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office stated last Thursday that, on Wednesday night while doing personal observation checks, corrections officers located an inmate believed to be suffering from a medical emergency, and called for a life squad while performing CPR and other emergency measures.

“Based on an initial review of the incident as well as witness accounts, it is believed that Burch ingested an illegal narcotic that had been smuggled into the jail,” Sheriff Ralph Fizer Jr. stated last week.

The investigation is continuing.
