Over 2,000 dancers — including members of the Clinton County Country Square Dance Club and 240 from Ohio, the event’s largest state delegation — attended the 71st Annual National Square Dance Convention in Evansville, Indiana.

The convention featured not only square dancing and calling, but also line dancing, contra, and round dancing. There was a special dance hall for dancers under age 18.

The opening ceremony for the four-day convention featured entertainment by Tom White, a well-known pianist from Mason, Ohio, who played a melody of patriotic songs.

Dance workshops were available daily for new dancers to improve their dancing skills while square dance callers and round dance cures from across the country provided dancing opportunities. Dancers were also allowed to participate in open competition square dancing with the winner being the last square standing.

The Ghost Riders Square Dance Band from California provided live band square dancing music every day.

A variety of wonderful exhibition groups such as the Heritage Dancers, and the River City Riders performed throughout the day. One of the highlights of the convention was the Moonlight Stroll by the River Fashion show.

The convention ceremonies’ coordinator was Tom Davis from Dayton — a featured caller for many state conventions and festivals.

The Clinton County Country Square dancers offer weekly western square dance lessons to people of all ages at the Dove Church in Wilmington. A new class of dancers should be starting in July.

Anyone interested in taking lessons should contact Club President Wayne Ames or any member of the club.

Also, the members are now making plans for next year’s convention in Mobile, Alabama.
