OSHP: 1 dead in 3-vehicle I-71 crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Wilmington Post is investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Sunday at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Interstate 71 in Jefferson Township, Greene County.

Preliminary investigation indicates a black 2020 Chevrolet Malibu, a black 2012 Honda Civic, and a white 2008 Ford E-350 van were all traveling southwest on Interstate 71 approaching an active construction zone.

The Chevrolet Malibu and Honda Civic were slowing or stopped in traffic when the Honda Civic was struck in the rear end by the Ford E-350 van, according to a news release from the OSHP.

The impact pushed the Honda Civic into the rear-end of the Chevrolet Malibu before all three units traveled off the left side of the roadway into the grass median.

The left rear passenger of the Honda Civic was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Jefferson Township EMS and Greene County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was transported by ground to Miami Valley Hospital in Jamestown.

The driver of the Honda Civic was transported by MedFlight to Kettering Hospital in Kettering. The front passenger of the Honda Civic was transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital main in Dayton.

The names of the parties involved have not been released pending next-of-kin notification.

Units assisting on scene were the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, New Jasper Township Fire/EMS, Jefferson Township Fire/EMS, Greene County Coroner’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
