The Blanchester-Great Oaks FFA chapter hosted a Grain Bin Safety demonstration for their members during their October chapter meeting, which was held at Pelosi Farms.

Vice President of Agriculture Gracie Kaehler presented to the members on how grain bin explosions can occur, as well as some preventative measures agriculturalists may take to prevent them from happening.

Gracie Kaehler also demonstrated a mock grain bin explosion using an empty gallon-size paint can.

Following the mock explosion, chapter member Cameron Pelosi gave members a tour of Pelosi Farms, a large-scale grain operation near Pleasant Plain.

Members then had the opportunity to enter into an empty grain bin and see what the inside was like, while learning the functions of the bin.

Pelosi also gave a tour of the grain bin control room, and demonstrated how to operate machines and equipment.

“I was very pleased with how the grain bin safety explosion turned out,” President Kimberly Hurst said. “It was evident that our members were very interested and intrigued with the event. The event helped to convey an important message of safety to everyone involved in a fun and exciting way!”

The Blanchester-Great Oaks FFA would like to thank the Pelosi family for allowing them to use their farm for this tour and demonstration.

Members definitely enjoyed the grain bin safety demonstration, became more aware of the potential dangers of a grain operation, and are excited to broaden their horizons in FFA.
