Thanks given at open house

In a surprise announcement at a “Giving Thanks” open house Saturday that spotlighted extensive renovations made recently to the women and children’s shelter, the board of the Clinton County Services for the Homeless has named the place the Matrka Family House. The naming honors Dr. Tom Matrka, left, his wife Dr. Janet Gick, right, and their son Mark Matrka, all of whom have performed volunteer work on the shelter’s properties. This building opened in 1988 as the organization’s first shelter. In 2008 an annex building was opened for men, and the Clinton County Homeless Shelter now can provide emergency shelter for up to 38 men, women and children each night. There is new fencing at the Matrka Family House for the safety of the children.

Volunteers and supporters who contributed to renovating what’s now named the Matrka Family House received public recognition Saturday at an open house. Those supporters present for the photograph are, from left, Jay Barkey, Jeanne Smith, Billie Baker, Sylvia E. Accountius, Dr. Tom Matrka, Timi Callender, Sharon Benning, Dr. Janet Gick, Nancy McCormick, Charlene Prindle and Rich Baker. Health First of Clinton County gave funds used to purchase all new, energy-efficient windows. There also were funds donated anonymously, plus dollars obtained through the Ohio Housing Finance Agency. And a group from the Presbyterian Church served as volunteer workers on the project.
