WILMINGTON — A local man was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with robbery.

During the early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan. 17, officers were dispatched to Speedway for a reported robbery.

“The unidentified subject threatened the clerk and claimed to have a gun but never brandished it,” said Wilmington Police Chief Duane Weyand. “The unidentified male subject left the scene with cash.”

A short time later, officers were able to identify the subject as John Dusty Fields, 31, of Wilmington, Weyand said. Officers checked several residences for his whereabouts but didn’t locate him until Thursday.

Thursday afternoon, officers got a tip that Fields was at a Columbus Street address and he had a firearm in his possession, Weyand said. “Officers were able to secure the house and surrounding area and take Fields into custody without incident,” he said.

Upon his arrest, officers were able to solve an additional burglary in which a firearm was stolen, Weyand said.

Fields is currently in the Clinton County Jail on robbery charges.

“We anticipate filing additional charges on Fields in the coming weeks,” said Weyand.
