Clinton County commissioners and Liberty Township trustees hold dual meetings

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP — This year is the bicentennial year for Liberty Township in northern Clinton County, and preliminary plans call for an anniversary function to be held probably in either July or August.

The 200th birthday of the township was one of the items brought up during dual business meetings Wednesday morning involving the Liberty Township trustees and the county commissioners.

The township’s bicentennial celebration tentatively will include a speaker as well as cake and punch, trustees said.

Liberty Township Trustee President Ron Stryker also said, “We’re trying to ask around for old photographs.”

Also in the planning stages is the annual Memorial Day observance for the township area. Trustees hope to contact Don DeVoe to be part of the program. A longtime former college basketball head coach and former college basketball player, DeVoe grew up in Port William.

The board of trustees is responsible for three active cemeteries in the township — the new and old Maple Grove Cemeteries in Port William and the Miller Cemetery on Gano Road.

Recently hired Liberty Township Road Superintendent Myles Halye will soon take online cemetery training.

The meetings were held in the Liberty Township Hall located on State Route 134 south of Port William.

Commissioners plan to continue holding dual meetings with township trustees and village councils around the county. The format allows for face-to-face interaction and discussion on how county government and the political subdivisions in the county can help each other, Clinton County Commissioner President Kerry R. Steed told the trustees Wednesday.
