An evening to remember at WHS

The American flag shows through the “smoke” (actually powder) amidst the WHS students.

It was a special evening Friday at Wilmington High School’s Alumni Field, where the Hurricane hosted the first varsity game there since 2007. School, staff and students — from the team to the band and beyond — commemorated the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Shown, the WHS student section does its own red, white and blue tribute using colored powder.

Veteran Josh Sams was among those honored Friday evening before the football game at Wilmington High School. Sams lost both legs while on his third deployment with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2012 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) during a foot patrol in Afghanistan. He now walks with prosthetic legs.

First responders were honored at Alumni Field Friday night.
