WC’s Senior Thesis Exhibit features works by Rebecca Hufford

WILMINGTON — Wilmington College senior art student Rebecca Hufford describes her artwork as “expressions of the soul” and she wishes for viewers to feel some of the emotions she felt while creating those pieces.

Hufford will present a series of her works at WC’s Senior Thesis Exhibit running in Harcum Art Gallery from April 26 through May 13. An opening reception is planned April 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. Normal gallery hours are weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by special arrangement from curator Hal Shunk, professor of art.

“I have always used art as an outlet for my emotions,” said Hufford, a senior majoring in art and religion and philosophy from Springfield, noting that many of her pieces reflect what she was feeling as she created them. In fact, she believes the success of her art rests in her audience’s reaction.

“I want those viewing my work to see a part of me and to realize that art can be a powerful outlet for thoughts and emotions that are otherwise unspoken,” she added.

Hufford described much of her work as being inspired by her connections to nature and the “tranquility of night.” She combines such imagery as trees, vines and birds with a surrounding of dark colors. “If a realistic representation of these things is not used, I will often incorporate something that I feel holds the essence of these things. All of my pieces spawn from an emotion and whatever I associate with that emotion is what I incorporate into that specific piece.”

Her most recent work is representative of mixed media and 3D materials that “pop out at the viewer and add interest to the piece” from more than one angle.

The works of Rebecca Hufford will be featured April 26-May 13.
